Coding and skill still matter.

Watch this video to see the experience of a developer trying to build an app using agentic coding without really thinking through the architecture.

AI can often get you 99% of the way there, but if you’re not in control of the project, that last 1% becomes impossible. And to stay in control, you need to be a good developer—not just someone who can prompt an AI.

If you don’t understand the architecture, the logic, and how the different parts of the system work together, you’ll eventually hit a wall. You won’t be able to confidently modify, debug, or extend the code because it isn’t just syntax—it’s a complex system of interconnected logic.

If you didn’t build that understanding yourself, the project effectively becomes a black box.

No matter how powerful AI becomes, this fundamental reality won’t change.

Exactly, AI works really well if you do focused tasks with it and check its output. However, vibe coding everything from start to finish will result in AI slop.

That, I suspect, is why the explosion never came. The takeoff story assumed the limit was thinking. It isn’t. The limit is contact with reality. A smarter reasoner fills the gaps between known facts in simple areas faster and better, but it doesn’t produce new facts.

An AI will hand you a genuinely clever design for a jet turbine blade. It might be far more likely to work than anything your engineers came up with. It’ll still probably fail, because that’s the base rate at the edge of what anyone knows. The only way to find out is to build the blade and try to break it.

I think this is accurate and kind-of explains why AI is pretty good at coding but pretty useless for business discussion.

I’m starting to see the AI as a “super-nerd” who’s read a million books but never went outside the house.

I’m not sure what this means but it takes me back to something I’ve noticed in life: I’ve had a lot of peers who were great at coding, great at mathematics, but not necessarily achieved great success. Usually stuck in some mediocre 9-to-5 job.

I suspect coding is not actually the hard problem or valuable skill here.

The valuable skill for independent developers like us is probably more in the business area: delivering value to customers, growing a business, envisioning a product that doesn’t exist. These are the kind of things that are never ‘obvious’ - people and AIs will always bring objections like “it’s already been done!” or “this will never work!” etc.

I was right and this is staring to show…

AI can only work if you are good enough to work in small steps and be a good architect and even if AI write most of the code now, CODING still matter, the better you are with it the better the outcome…

It was oboious from day one that the “Build me Youtube. don’t make any mistakes” is pure stupity, the architecture involved in building and app and all the littele details can’t be prompted, they must be engineered… so nothing changed it just go easier for senior dev AI is haven, for begginers AI is trap they will never get out of it…

Long story short, I think this is actually a good thing. It will weed out the developers who are only in it for the easy life and the money. The ones who will remain are those who genuinely care about what they do, developers driven not just by profit, but by passion for what they do.

It doesn’t matter how good AI gets, this will never change. Building an app involves countless technical details that only a developer can truly work through. After all, we’re engineers. Think about everything we’ve had to learn and all the years of grinding to get where we are today. The amount of knowledge and experience we’ve built is incredible, and that’s not something AI can simply replace.

Companies are starting to learn this the hard way, there is a trend now of vibe coding some app wihtout undersntanding what AI did and of course you get stuck at 70% - 99%, is inevitable ! And than ask for a senior dev to fix it and finish the project, at that point is almost impossible to fix the slop… the project is lost!

Yesterday I had a old client who did exactly this, vibe coded an app with cursor it has zero idea how it works and contacted me for 200$ to fix it an add one of my sliders i n the app, I said no, this is an 1000$ job easy and he agreed, this kind of mess will happen more and more, the propaganda that you don’t need to learn anythign anymore AI will do it for you is a big far lie :), and we all know it but somehow it got even into us… however things are starting to calibrate as expected with any techonolgy.

Is AI good, holy s*it is amazing, for me is pure haven not to write the code anymore just to put it in place and create magic, this is defenitely the future and it will get better and better until we will not be able to tell the difference between agents and most likely we will have our own AI agent local on our computers as stong as the best models there are not avialble like gpt 6 etc… the future looks birght if you ask me!
