I just got trademarked out of the Aiomatic name

Great job, did you pay to register this?

Haven’t paid yet, but I will soon pay the trademark fee… Around 1000 EUR…

I see, so is not cheap

@CodeRevolution - you really shouldn’t have to pay that kind of money to trademark your name. EVEN if you did, then do you realise how expensive it would be to then ENFORCE the name if you had to take it to legal courts.

Good point and I know that the entire trademark business is a scam, all these ā€œentitiesā€ are willing to ā€œprotect your businessā€, if you pay them for their ā€œprotectionā€ā€¦

Too many quotes…

Interesting. I guess it’s a form of government involvement in free markets, which I’m generally opposed to.

What would happen if e.g. anyone could create and sell ā€˜coca-cola’? On one hand, I guess that leads to lower prices and more competition which is beneficial to consumers.

On the other hand, if anyone could take anyone else’s name, that kind of disincentivizes people from creating something new. Would also allow bad actors to misrepresent that they are someone else. It also creates issues for consumers, e.g. you want to buy a coca cola, but you want one of the good ones, not a shitty copy, and it’s hard to tell which is which.

Yeah, it’s annoying, but it could’ve been worse. I was already planning the free version and wordpress.org launch, so the timing kind of forced my hand in a good way. Also, it helped a lot in making myself unexclusive on Envato and move the plugin to WPBay. Rebrand, relaunch, like a fresh start with cleaner positioning.

The trademark system is a bit wild though. Pay & wait and suddenly you have leverage over names which are similar to yours. Lesson learned, I guess. If you’re building anything serious, be sure to protect the name early or be ready to pivot fast.

Aimogen feels solid so far…
