WPBay policy: should we allow the selling or transfer of WPBay accounts?

So, now that Envato is changing, i see many people sell their Envato accounts… i saw many smaller accounts for sale, but also some large ones… people are trying to abandon ship… however… Envato clearly states that their accounts are not transferrable, selling is not permitted in any circumstance.

So, people who buy Envato accounts and change their tax profile and payout details, risk account closure.

In light of this, I started thinking on what should WPBay policy be regarding this subject.

So, I completely understand why Envato set this policy, to not allow scammers to sell their accounts to other scammers… anyway, I personally think that accounts should be allowed to be sold, but in good faith.

So, I am thinking to allow sales of accounts, but in good faith, meaning that WPBay must be announced of the transaction, also, if it is a seller account, customers must be announeced also, in an email (WPBay has already this infrastructure).

So, what do you think of this?

  • Yes, without limits
  • Yes, but in good faith (WPBay and account customers announced)
  • Yes, but only customer accounts
  • No, this is not ok
  • Other option? Comment below

Yes, this should be allowed, provided it’s done in good faith. The main issue I see is that if an author sells their account, the new owner may have little or no understanding of how the products were originally made. This could definitely lead to problems with support, maintenance, and future updates. Other than that, I don’t really see any major concerns.

Envato became far too strict in this regard, along with many other things. At this point, though, it’s just a sad story. Most of us simply want to move on and leave the negativity behind — not because we hate Envato itself, since many of us still genuinely love the platform, but because the real problem lies with the CEO and upper management.

That’s what I personally want to get away from. They seem completely disconnected from what they’re doing and appear determined to squeeze the soul out of Envato until there’s nothing left. If things continue like this, I honestly believe Envato could become just a memory within the next 1–2 years unless new leadership steps in.

Hichame Assi should not be in charge. He has already shown everyone exactly how “good” his leadership is.

What about something like this:

WPBay may permit transfer of seller accounts or seller businesses upon prior written approval. Transfers require identity verification, updated tax/payment details, acceptance of marketplace terms by the buyer and customer notification where ownership change materially affects support, licensing or ongoing subscriptions. WPBay may reject transfers involving fraud risk, misleading reputation transfer or customer harm.

I guess this will work, but the issue with support still stands. Imagine I sell you my account and you suddenly see a GPGPU shader in the codebasw, how would support handle that if something goes wrong? And that’s just one example.

That said, I do agree this should probably be allowed. My opinion is: go with it and see what happens. If issues come up later, things can always be updated or adjusted.

What’s really important, though, is maintaining very strict quality standards overall so we continue representing WordPress well. I know from experience that when something doesn’t work, WordPress is usually the first thing people blame.

Good point. Support continuity is probably the biggest practical issue here. Buying a seller account does not automatically transfer the original creator’s technical knowledge…

Maybe this means the policy should distinguish between simply selling an account and transferring an actual product business with its codebase, support responsibility and rights included.

But on the marketplace’s side, I am not sure how this can be filtered, as we cannot check the expertise of the new seller, giving them a quick exam on what technologies are using in the products which they will purchase. So this is a bit tricky…

Updated policy:

WPBay may permit transfer of seller businesses, including associated seller accounts, upon prior written approval. Transfers require identity verification, updated tax/payment details, acceptance of marketplace terms by the buyer and customer notification where ownership change materially affects support, licensing or ongoing subscriptions. WPBay may reject transfers involving fraud risk, misleading reputation transfer, inadequate support continuity or potential customer harm.
